Broadway Family Scholarship
It’s a fact that people who really want to give will find a way. Such was the case with LaVonne and Lee Broadway. They were active in their church, Gethsemane Lutheran in La Crescenta, and LaVonne was a regular volunteer in her local thrift store and the offices of Lutheran Brotherhood.
As a volunteer at Lutheran Brotherhood LaVonne she learned that she could, through a vehicle known as a single premium whole life insurance policy, create a scholarship at CLU to receive the annual earnings from the policy. Those earnings amounted to approximately $500 per year for several years.
As the years passed, the value of the policy decreased to the point where it no longer provided sufficient earnings for an award. It was decided to cash in the policy and create an endowed fund with what remained. But that cash amount needed a boost to help it reach endowment level.
The happy ending to this story is that,, through payroll deduction contributions, several CLU supporters came to the rescue, supporting the fund and helping it to survive and thrive. Thus the Broadway Family Scholarship, designated for deserving CLU students, continues to exist today. Thanks go to LaVonne for her good planning, and thanks go as well to those other CLU donors who helped prove that where there’s a will, there is a way—sometimes alone and sometimes with a little help from your friends.
