Detlaf and Lucie Muller Scholarship
Much can be learned, or at least inferred, about someone’s priorities in life from the way they handle the final distribution of their earthly goods. That can certainly be said about Mildred Muller, who passed away in 1980, leaving a bequest to CLC that created this scholarship in tribute to her parents.
Mildred Muller was first and foremost a dedicated Lutheran. She was a native of Stockton, California, and graduated from the University of the Pacific. She went on to earn her master’s degree at the University of Southern California and then worked as a counseling psychologist and teacher of special education and remedial reading for many years. She loved young people and encouraged them to seek a college education and to strive to reach their goals. During her teaching career, she taught in schools in Little Rock, Porterville, Tulare and Visalia, retiring from teaching in 1973.
Mildred was also an active and dedicated member of her church. She taught Sunday school, served on the church council and worked diligently in the women’s organizations of Lutheran churches in the communities in which she lived. She was also one of CLC’s early Founding Fellows.
Mildred never married, but paying tribute to her parents, Detlaf and Lucie Hohn Muller, was of utmost importance to her. She took steps to honor them at both CLU and UC Davis. Criteria by which recipients were to be selected included those students planning to enter the fields of education, nursing, literature or guidance.
