Dorothy Isabel Anderson Endowed Scholarship
It is always important to show hospitality to strangers, because you never know when they may turn out to be angels in disguise. This certainly proved to be the case when Mr. Charles M. Anderson, president of the Anderson Foundation in Seattle dropped into CLU’s Admission Office in the spring of 1999. He was accompanied by a potential student who had the desire but not the financial means to attend CLU. The admissions counselor apparently conducted the interview professionally because Mr. Anderson left pleased and impressed. He didn’t ask to meet anyone else but did hint at the possibility of making a contribution for scholarships.
Charles Anderson was a man of his word. Within weeks CLU received the first of three generous annual grants from the Anderson Foundation. The grants helped to establish an endowed scholarship fund in the name of Charles’ sister, Dorothy Isabel Anderson. Dorothy had begun her career as a school teacher and later became a registered hospital dietitian. A devout Christian, Dorothy was a relentless advocate of quality higher education. Selection of recipients for the Dorothy Isabel Anderson Scholarship is totally at the discretion of CLU.
Who could have known that when Charles Anderson knocked on CLU’s door he would prove to be such an “angel” for CLU? Despite the University’s efforts to invite him back, he never returned to CLU for a second visit. Still, this scholarship is a very good demonstration of why it never hurts to practice genuine hospitality to any stranger who comes your way.
