Hoff Family Scholarship
There are several families that will forever hold a special spot in the history of California Lutheran University because of their faith in and dedication to the vision that created the institution. The Hoff family is one of those families.
Three members of the Hoff family are proud CLU alumni—Stephanie Hoff ‘74 Brice, Jeffrey Hoff ‘77 and Christopher Hoff ’80—and that’s because their parents spent many hours as champions for Cal Lutheran in the early days of the school, a devotion they retained for CLU throughout their lives.
The Rev. Cameron Hoff was pastor of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Santa Monica for many years. He was a popular pastor known as much for his love of athletics as for his strengths as a spiritual leader. He served at various times as Convocator, Regent and active supporter of the college’s athletic programs. His wife Sherry shared his commitment to CLC through her involvement in the Inland Pacific Conference Scholarship and as a member of the CLU Guild and loyal parent supporter. When volunteers were needed, Sherry was there.
In 1985, after Pastor Hoff passed away, daughter Stephanie and her husband David established the Hoff Family Scholarship in honor of the long-term involvement of the entire Hoff family in the affairs of CLC.
The criteria put into place for the selection of the recipient may evoke a smile in those who read the agreement. The scholarship is to be awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior with an average academic record who is a “well-rounded” individual. To further clarify the term “well-rounded,” Stephanie explained that the scholarship should go to someone who was: “not a student only and any major except pre-seminarian.” In that regard, the Hoff Family Scholarship is one-of-a-kind.
