Jodi Moore Memorial Scholarship
Jodi Moore was the type of student every church-related institution hopes to recruit. And Cal Lutheran became that fortunate institution. Jodi enrolled as a freshman in 1981 and graduated in 1985. She was a strong student and chose a double major—political science and English. Her admiration and affection for her professors were returned in good measure simply because she was so likable. She did have her favorites, however, and Dr. Jan Bowman and Pastor Mark Knutson were at the top of her list.
Jodi took an active role in campus life. She sang in the CLC choir, played on the tennis team and was very involved in the student congregation, Lord of Life. The core value of her life was her Christian faith, so it came as no surprise that in her senior year she was chosen as the Santa Lucia Bride, a holiday tradition among Scandinavian families and institutions like CLC.
After she graduated Jodi entered law school at the University of Idaho, earning her Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D) in 1988. She became an attorney with the U.S. Marine Corps in Virginia. She rented an apartment near her work, where she was killed by an unknown assailant in February 1990.
One month later, the Class of 1985 launched a letter appeal for an endowed scholarship in Jodi’s memory. Wayne Woodyard, class representative, led the effort. Within a year, and with the help of Jodi’s parents, the Jodi Moore Memorial Scholarship became endowed. Alan and Sandie Moore, already loyal supporters of everything CLC, made the enhancement of the endowment their personal priority. And a group of her faithful college friends continued to keep Jodi’s memory alive through their gifts.
In thinking about criteria for the scholarship that was to bear their daughter’s name, the Moores wanted to capture the chief traits of their daughter, especially her faith. She had been a beloved daughter, an exemplary student and a cherished friend to many. Ultimately the Moores decided on a single criterion: The scholarship should be awarded to “someone who is Christ-centered, with a love for people, for living, for learning, and for serving others.”
