Kathryn Adair Price Endowed Scholarship

Kathryn Adair Price Endowed Scholarship

The last name of Price seems to appear frequently on CLU’s list of students and faithful donors, but this particular Price family has an unusual history.

Kathryn Adair Price, better known to her classmates and professors as “Katie,” was a hardworking English major who had been inspired to come to CLU by her aunt, Anne Edgecombe ‘72, and her uncle, Gerald Price ‘68. Even though Katie’s parents, Craig and Diedre Price, lived in Florida, Katie’s grandmother, Marjorie Price, lived just a few miles from campus. And there was already a scholarship at CLU in memory of John Price, Katie’s grandfather.

As a student Katie lived off-campus with her grandmother. She frequently rode her motorbike to school. During her freshman year, she had a serious accident on Lynn Road, the main thoroughfare from her grandmother’s home to campus. The accident put her in the hospital for several weeks. But she was determined to resume her studies and returned to campus a few weeks later. To all who knew her, she was a memorable student with a bright future.

Following her graduation in 1993, Katie pursued and completed a master’s degree at Truman State University in Missouri. She then entered a doctoral program in English at Northern Illinois University. During her third year of study Katie was involved in a single-car accident as she was returning from a weekend trip to visit a friend. She passed away on June 21, 1999, just one year after the death of her grandmother.

Katie’s family established this scholarship in her memory and designed it for aspiring English majors. In one of their rare acts as a department, every member of the CLU English faculty contributed to the scholarship’s endowment. The Kathryn Adair Price Endowed Scholarship was first awarded on Honors Day 2000 in the presence of Price family members and many CLU students. Katie’s love of poetry and prose lives on through this award and its recipients.
