Lundring Family Endowed Scholarship
Christian stewardship is most often taught by example. Perhaps that is because it is best seen and experienced to fully comprehend. Axel and Hazel Lundring, faithful Lutherans, did an excellent job of teaching stewardship to their three children and many grandchildren. Their success was evident when they suggested starting a music scholarship at Cal Lutheran, their favorite college. It was their daughter Catherine ‘69 and her husband Wayne Hillard who took the first major step in making the scholarship a reality.
Other family members soon followed their example, including Axel and Hazel themselves, their children Karsten ’65 and Kirsten ’64, and Nada and Nelius Ronning. Before long, all the Lundring family members had joined in supporting the family scholarship through their own stewardship.
The Lundring Family Endowed Scholarship was initiated during CLC’s Called to Excellence fundraising campaign, one goal of which was to expand the institution’s endowment, especially in the area of student scholarships. Axel had served two terms as a CLC Convocator and knew the pressing need for more scholarships for students. When it came to choosing the focus of their scholarship, it was the family’s unanimous decision that it should be music. They narrowed it further by pinpointing participation in the CLC choir as the major criterion.
True to their word, the Lundrings continued to build the endowment over the next several years . . . that is, until Axel came up with a great idea for a second scholarship in the Lundring name to focus on youth leadership. That’s yet another story in the scholarship annals of CLU.
