Orman and Olive Freeman Scholarship

Orman and Olive Freeman Scholarship

Although they were never on the CLU campus, Orman and Olive Freeman became part of the Cal Lutheran family through their offspring. At the time of their parents’ death the three adult Freeman children—one son and two daughters—decided to honor their exemplary lives through this scholarship.

The Freeman children, Barbara, Kenneth and Patricia, described their parents in this way: “They lived their faith daily and were exemplary models of faith and love to all who knew them, especially their children.” It was no wonder, then, that this Lutheran family chose a Lutheran institution for the Freeman memorial scholarship.

Orman and Olive Freeman’s grandson, Mark Marius ’92, became the link between the Freemans and CLU. After graduation, Mark pursued graduate work at Gettysburg Seminary and became an ordained chaplain. It was Mark’s mother, Patricia, who persuaded her brother and sister to create this scholarship in honor of their parents. It quickly became a family affair with everyone contributing to bring it to an endowed level for the benefit of future students.

The family decided that the Orman and Olive Freeman Scholarship should be awarded to an academically strong religion major planning to attend seminary and serve the church. The scholarship is for the student’s senior year, and the family prefers that the recipient be a Lutheran. This memorial scholarship is a fitting tribute to two people who truly lived out their faith.
