Phoebe Ying Wei Music Scholarship

Phoebe Ying Wei Music Scholarship

Phoebe Ying Wei was an extraordinary woman, and CLU is indebted to former professor Dr. Ed Tseng and his wife Genevieve for the privilege of adding this endowed scholarship to its Honor Roll. Phoebe Wei was Genevieve’s aunt, and Ed was instrumental in directing her estate to CLU for the scholarship.

Hong Kong was Phoebe’s home. Because of discrimination against women, it was most unusual for a Chinese woman to come to the United States to pursue graduate study. However, with the help of her brother (Genevieve’s father) Phoebe earned her master’s degree in music theory from the University of Michigan. Music was the focus of her life, and the piano was her instrument of choice. She was quite proficient at both performance and teaching. Returning to Hong Kong, she taught at different colleges, but she was happiest when teaching piano to her individual students both in public and in private.

Phoebe died sometime around 1993. The bequest from her estate was received at CLU by wire transfer in 2001 and was more than enough to establish an endowed fund for the scholarship. Interestingly, the gift was a combination of donations from the several beneficiaries of her estate.

The agreement for the Phoebe Ying Wei Music Scholarship was determined by Phoebe’s niece Genevieve and her husband Ed. The recipient must be an upper-division music major with a special interest in piano and carrying a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Given CLU’s emphasis on the fine arts, the Phoebe Ying Wei Music Scholarship is a coveted scholarship.
