Samuel and Julia Moore Scholarship

Samuel and Julia Moore Scholarship

A little suggestion from a fellow church member was all it took for Julia Moore to take the next step and purchase an annuity that would allow her to create a scholarship with a double purpose—to memorialize her husband and help college students pursue their academic goals. That annuity became part of her will and eventually the funds came to California Lutheran University to establish the Moore Scholarship.

Julia Moore was a widow when she purchased the annuity in 1992. She had lost her husband Samuel a few years earlier. The two of them had been active members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Beach, where her attorney friend Borgny Baird also worshiped.

Neither Julia nor Samuel had graduated from college, but they wanted to make it possible for other young people to get a solid college education. In designating her criteria for the award, she kept things very simple.

Julia designated the Samuel and Julia Moore Scholarship to be awarded to “any deserving student attending CLU.” Finding a recipient for this scholarship is an easy matter, through her trust in the University to identify a student who merits the award.
