The Evan T. Carthen ASCLUG Leadership Scholarship

The Evan T. Carthen ASCLUG Leadership Scholarship

Leadership is that quality of character that a university tries and hopes to instill in its students. It’s also a trait that most students hope to achieve during their college experience.

The development of the ASCLUG Leadership Scholarship in the spring of 2009 was a testament to the leadership CLU was successfully fostering in its students. At that time the student government leaders took a bold step in creating an endowed scholarship that would further the development of leadership among traditional undergraduate students. To help make that happen, the ASCLUG gifted $10,000 of their unused student fees to establish the original corpus of the scholarship. That gift was the inspiration for another $1,000 from Student Life.

The student leaders also wanted to promote the idea giving back to CLU as a token of their appreciation for the many ways CLU students are able to be involved in the life and leadership of the campus. Evidence that they succeeded was clear when, the following year, the 2010 ASCLUG leadership provided another $6,500 to the endowment. Once again, the spirit of philanthropy was sparked in CLU students.

In defining the criteria for the ASCLUG Leadership Scholarship award, the original student leaders requested that it be given to an upper-division student who has shown strong leadership potential. The award is evidence that the University is succeeding in its mission to help students become outstanding leaders. Those leaders, as alumni, continue to make a difference in our community and our country.

In 2017 the scholarship was renamed The Evan T. Carthen Leadership Scholarship in memory of past ASCLU President, and 2016 alumnus, Evan T. Carthen.
